Subject: [ROOTS-L] Goodale/Goodell/Goodeill Family Excerpt
Date: Tue, 2 Oct 2001 13:25:56 -0700

I am trying to identify the source of the following foreword written
about the Goodale/Goodell/Goodeill Family.

I have a 16 page excerpt. In the hope that someone can identify this
excerpt I am transcribing the Foreword. If anyone recognizes this, or the
people mentioned I would greatly appreciate a response.

FOREWORD

"While the impressions are still vivid and remembrance clear, I propose to
write out some of the incidents of the Goodale Family. Many of them need no
comment here. Their history, which can be found in the Astor Library, New
York City. In Temple, New Hampshire, Windham County, Conn., Shrewsbury,
Marlboro, West Boylston, Mass., and other libraries of Massachusetts, show
the name 'Goodale' amount the prominent business and professional men of the
community."
"Having no records of the Goodales in Father's and Mother's line since
Grandfather Enes Goodale's and Grandfather Joseph Farwell's services in the
war of 1775, I began to accumulate material and preserve all the old records
I could obtain thinking that some day I would take up the subject.
Unfortunately, my house was burned, destroying all my treasured
correspondence, my father's and my mother's most valuable keepsakes and all
my grandparent's records, leaving me utterly without anything to begin with
or to continue the facts of Goodale Genealogy."
" My first work was to write to Eliza W. Goodale, brother Joseph's widow,
who gave me invaluable assistance; also Professor Goodale of Harvard
College, Leon A Goodale of Brown University, Providence, Rhode Island,
Professor I. Goodale, Fort Worth, Texas; S.L.D. Goodale, Wells River,
Vermont, Reverend G.W. Goodale, Hebron, Nebraska, and Lucy Hall Greenlaw,
genealogist, Cambridgeport, Massachusetts."
"I believe these reminiscences will be interesting to those who have
personally associated with me in my labors, but more particularly will be
instructive to our children and to those who come after them."
"May all future generations look with pride upon their ancestors'
records and with such a determined spirit of emulation that their
descendants may record their histories and keep them intact to immortality."

END of FOREWORD
