Subject: [ROOTS-L] General Genealogy question

I am fairly new to genealogy (started about a year or so ago) I have a
general question that has been bothering me since I started so wanted to get
other people's opinions. Hope I can express this right so you'll know what
I'm talking about....

For example: I am researching the LAYTON family. The first generation I
have has no locality with it........but I do know they had one child who was
born in Ohio. and I know that later on most of them were centered around
Illinois. So this is my question.....when someone else pops up and is
researching the LAYTON name but says my Layton's wouldn't be the same
because their Layton's are from Missouri or California or whatever, how do
you know that this isn't like a brother's family from my first generation
that went to CA instead of IL? Is that clear at all? I just hate to let
all this info go by me if somewhere down the line, here is brother George
who I didn't know existed that decided he'd go west instead of east. I
hope this makes sense to someone..lol Rita (DOROTHY) LAYTON
