In the mid 1800s, a day laborer earned about $3.00 a month, or 36 dollars a
year.. A typesetter made about $240.00 a year. So a sum of $4,000 would
have been a princley estate back then - it would be worth 111 years worth of
wages for a day laborer and 16 years for a type setter. Today, we would be
lucky if that was worth 1 - 6 MONTHS of wages!
I am glad you asked that Fran - helps put another perspective on what things
were worth back then - I never have thought about money back then before!
Happy hunting!
