I was looking through some some old Ancestry magazines this evening and
found the following excerpt from the March/April 1997 issue:

"Genealogy's rising popularity....is the subject of an article recently
featured in Newsweek magazine. The 24 February 1997 issue cites a study
done for American Demographics magazine which concludes that 'forty-two
million Americans have started to trace their heritage.'...."

For those looking for a formal study, it might be worth looking into the
article in the American Demographics magazine. Try the periodicals indexes
in your local public library.
