It means something like "Also known as..." If you track some of the names far enough you will see that in some families the original name (before the "dit" [pronounced 'dee']) is kept by some members and the "also known as..." part of the name (after the
"dit") is adopted by other members of that same family. It can make for a bit of confusion. <smile>
