When I started genealogy over 7 years ago, I began with a course taught at
a local community college. The teacher, now deceased, told us her story of
the Morman teachings and how she dealt with them. Brought up
Congregationalist, she really didn't now much about tthe LDS faith, but had
used their records in her professional job as a genealogist and thought they
were a wonderful contribution to all of us.
When her mother, who was a strong woman of her faith, died, she soon heard
from a distant relative who was a member of the LDS , who wanted all kinds
of information for the rites of sealing and all. She was very uncomfortable
with this and decided to ask her pastor how he felt about this. His
reply--"Was your mother a good Christian? Do you believe she is in heaven?
Then what difference does it make what your cousin does as she practices HER
faith, when your faith tells you she already has all the benefits of
eternal life?" That pleased her and she sent the information to her cousin
to do as she wished with it.
That story put my mind at ease and I have never given the issue another
thought.I found some cousins on the LDS records, and actually met them on a
trip to Maine and they had us come and visit them to go over records. They
were lovely people and because she had submitted the records to the LDS--I
am much further along in my search. I don't question others faith and don't
expect them to question mine
