I forgot one thing to help use the pre 1940 C.A.D.I. and is the codes for the counties http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~yvonne/NORCAL%20index/cadidx.html#codes

Also if it was a state prison that he was in, you might want to check with the California State Library, for they have some of the early records http://www.lib.state.ca.us/


If it was the County Prison, I do not know if the San Diego Sheriff, would still have the records or not but you might want to check at this site http://www.sdsheriff.net/sheriff1.html
