One thing I've learned about looking for obituaries. My gr
grandmother seems to have evaporated when she was widowed at age 24-
25 so I began searching for obits on her siblings. I found one of
her brothers listed on an Ohio death index (I knew they were in Ohio
when they were younger and moved to IA when they married, but
eventually ret'd. to OH) and the Columbus OH obituary gave the basic
info about her brother's death. At the bottom of the obit there was
a short sentence, "send to Iowa newspaper".
Going back to the library in the town in IA where they'd previously
lived (20 yrs. or more ago) I found a lengthy, detailed about the
family. Much more info than the Columbus obituary had printed.
Sorry to find though, it still didn't mention my gr grandmother!
Another source of info can be local items perhaps put together by a
group of residents or even school children about someone who had
lived there. I happened onto a small typewritten booklet in one
library about some civil war soldiers who had lived in the county in
IA and saw a surname I'd been researching in Ohio where the family
originated. Curious to see if it could be the same person, I was
surprised to find it was indeed - an Uncle of my gr grandfather who'd
died suddenly when he was about 27 yrs. old. Little to nothing had
been proven about these people until I found this bio on the Civil
War veteran who'd migrated from Ohio to Iowa where he lived out his
life. It added greatly to my family info as the booklet gave the
names of several generations of the family, with birth, marriage and
death dates of many.
I'd never have been able to put all this together without the
priceless little booklet that was typed on onionskin paper back in
the early 1940's. I'm sure it was never published in any major way.
Our local genealogy society has collected and indexed obituaries of
residents of this area for many years and are available for
researchers - IF people will only ask. The city library has all the
newspapers published here since their inception in the late 1880's,
all on microfilm and available for research.
