I was wondering if someone could give me some direction. My great, great
grandfather was Sam M. Corley born in Mississsippi in 1836 and died in 1906

lady named Phetoray born in Arkansas. My mother had told me that her great
great grandmother was pure bred Indian. Would anyone have any suggestions
on how I go about finding out more information about her. Did the Indians
keep records? I would assume I need to find all of the Indian tribes in the
Texas/Arkansas area maybe?

Kay-
On the 1900 census in Freestone Texas she is listed as Phetney Corley and
she was married to Sam for 35 years (so she is pretty certainly the only
wife)--had 7 children 4 of which were still living. She was born in April 1834 in
Arkansas (her parents were both born in Arkansas also). She is listed as
White. I found a few other Phetneys on earlier censuses that could be her as a
child--and every one is listed as White.
I think perhaps you have a family "story" about Indian blood that doesn't
seem to be standing up to the facts.
