Subject: [ROOTS-L] LOOK UP PLEASE FOR SUSOR, ON 1870 Census, missing census records
Date: Wed, 18 Jul 2007 05:23:08 -0500
When you cannot find someone on census records and you are fairly sure where they may be located, there is always the time consuming option of going through the images one by one yourself. Another idea is to check the handwriting style for the time period and for instance, note that perhaps an "S" could be mistakenly interpreted as an "L". If it is a "foreign" name, try sounding it out as an enumerator might hear it and spell it that way.
After these suggestions, I have tongue-in-cheek as have been searching the past several days for a Frederick (Fred) SUSOR on the 1870 CENSUS in Lucas County, Ohio & other sites.
FREDERICK (Fred) SUSOR, b. abt 1840, MI.
Father was Dominic, mother was Agatha Monica Duval
(on 1860 Census , he is with his mother on Monroe, Mi Census under surname interpreted as "Lusa".
On the 1880 Lucas Co. OH census, they are listed as "Susan".
Fred's wife was Mary Lucy Navarre, b. Jan 1845 or 1846, b. Lucas Co.OH (she is with parents on 1850 & 1860 Census in Lucas Co. OH)
Children b. to Fred and Mary Susor before 1870 were:
Noah abt. 1861, OH
William J. abt 1862, OH
Ellen, abt 1865, OH
Mary abt 1865, OH
This is a French Canadian family, who pretty well stayed in Lucas
Co. OHio. Dominic and his ancestors are in Fr. Denissen's volumes so I have the family back to France. I found all the other census records, also his Civil War records and land records. I just cannot find them on the 1870 Census.
There have been varied spellings of the surname including Suzor, Suzore, Thanks for any help. Lynne in Texas
