Ruth, I agree with both sides of this issue. Research is getting more
expensive for both the researchers and the repositories. A positive step in
this direction is the fact that NARA has an effort to digitize their records and
put them online at footnote.com. This is a huge undertaking and I'm sure it
will take a long time. I think the answer is to share the expense by putting
our research online at World Connect and to cite our sources when we do. By
using this free website we can share our expenses with others. Also
transcribing documents such as wills and deeds and putting them on the US Genweb
project for the area where they originated will also help.
