I have a rather strange story about the changing of my great grandmothers
name. She apparently was born Charlotte Florance daughter of Charlotte Johnson
and George Alvis Florance. I found her on some census's as Charlotte, but
on subsequent ones there was no Charlotte, but there was a Lilly Dent, with
the same birth date. A cousin finally told me this story. Seems her father was
quite a gambler, but apparently not a very good one. He was in a poker game
and was loosing and was folding. One of his fellow gamblers said well you
have the baby's (Charlotte's) name. So, he bet and of course lost so the guy
who won named the baby. Lilly for Lilly Langtree an actress of the day, and
Dent, was supposed to have been some card game term. I heard his wife was
not very happy when he got home, but the baby went by Lilly after that. Never
knew for sure if this was true or not, but does make an interesting story.
