Hello Patricia,

I cannot tell from your message what area you are researching. However, I
can tell you that in the areas my relatives were moving to in the early /
mid 1800's there were no homes to rent or real estate agents.

Most followed the frontier and after buying or receiving land as a result of
that frontier land being divided up into parcels and put on the market.

In some cases land was awarded by the federal government to war veterans. In
other cases pioneers bought a specific parcel or parcels of land before they
left to head west.

Some of my relatives moved from NY to MI. One, for example, was in Niagara
County, NY in 1830. Niagara County was the frontier in 1830. They bought
land in MI while in Niagara County and then headed to MI. I know ofmany
cases where the land they initially bought was not the land they finally
settled on. There was much local buying and selling once they arrived.

While doing this local "buying and selling" they might be working the land
they originally bought or they might be staying in a tavern or boarding
house in the area.

I hope this is of some help to you. If you choose a location and investigate
local "stories" you can find example of this wilderness life. It was an
extremely difficult existence!

How did a person back in the late 1700's early 1800's that were migrating
into a new area, find property that was for sale .They did not have a local
real estate agent did they ?Those wagon trains of settlers going to a new
area where did they live while hunting for property ? .Did they send someone

ahead to buy property ?Did they stay in the wagon train until houses could
be built .How did they live after arriving in a new area if they had no
family already there ,and How did they find housing ?Patricia Perkins
