Hi Christine,
I can make a suggestion that I used several years ago. I, too, found
flowers at a grave. I used a fruit jar so that my note could stay inside
without weather disturbing it. I sealed the jar and left it snug in front
of the stone. The next time the people who left the flowers visited the
grave, they contacted me some 300 miles from where I live. I'm sure there
are other ways too. That is just what I used.

Subject: [ROOTS-L] Visiting graves of ancestors
Hi,
Last year I was fortunate to be able to locate the graves of two of my
great great grandparents and four of my great grandparents. I was so
excited to find flowers on my great grandparents' graves. I told my husband
I wouldn't mind staying at the cemetery this year for a couple of days to
see who put the flowers on the graves to exchange information! My husband
just rolled his eyes. I don't think he shares my enthusiasm for finding new
cousins.
Trying to be more practical, I was wondering if anyone had suggestions
for leaving a message in a cemetery to locate possible relatives? Hope that
doesn't sound too strange. These are gravestones that are standing upright
but there are others that are flat in the ground. The graves that I visited
are about 80 - 200 miles away from my home so I don't have a clue what city
to start looking in and I didn't even know I still had relatives in that
area. I would think I would need to use something covered in plastic in
case it rains - a notecard or ?. I also don't want the people who mow the
grass to destroy the note.
Could someone help me with their suggestions of a way to do this? I'd be
interested if someone has a story to share of a similar experience of this
sort that worked.
Thank you. Christine Jones (Utah)
