In 1989 I worked on the pre-census canvas for the 1990 census. We
walked around the area assigned to us with a list of streets and house
numbers. We had to verify that the house numbers were accurate - that
there was an actual residence at that address and add any that were
missing from the sheet. We stopped at every third house (I think it was
every third one - maybe fourth or fifth) and ring the bell and ask if
there were more than one apartment in the residence and we spoke to the
superintendent of apartment complexes to verify the number of
apartments. Also, we stopped at businesses and inquired if there were
living quarters in the building. Maybe they're starting early on the
pre-census canvas for the 2010 census. There's more ground to cover -
more developments and more people - that there was in 1989.
