Re: a census taker coming to the door (US) and wondering what was going on ...

I was just talking in another group about tje 2010 US Federal Census,
because I'd heard of program and money problems on a news story on the
radio. The net of it was that the notion of hand-held devices and a
move to "high tech" now looks like a dream that's gone - and it's back
to hiring more people and back to the world of pencils and paper for
yet another round of census taking.

As for census takers around now in 2008? Well yes - but not in the
area you mentioned. There's a "dry run" going on - but it's in two
places - a few counties in California - and a few in North Carolina.
You can read about it here at the US Census site: (actually,, I think
they're calling it a dress rehersal)
http://www.census.gov/2010census/2008_dress_rehearsal/

Also, they're very clear that even for this - people (April 2008) are
getting forms in the mail first - then again - then only if not
returned - census takers visit in person - and then - have official
badges to identify themselves. So yes, I'd advise you and yours to be
careful who is knocking at their door.

So yes - there is census activity going on - a dress rehersal in 2008
for the 2010 census - but only in 2 locations.

So no - we won't all be seeing census folks at our door.

Hope that helps ..

Deb
(who was hoping we WOULD be moving to computers vs chisels and stone
this round!)
