Members of the Society of Friends / Quakers met in years past in what was
not referred to as a church, but a "Meeting House". In the old meeting houses
the men and women were always seperated and they had benches in the front
called "facing benches". It was here that the "elders" sat facing the rest of the
congregation. Newer meeting houses are not usually built this was, but many
old buildings still exist and hold Sunday meetings. Nancy
