I can remember 2 of my great-grandfathers, they always poured the tea or
coffee into the saucer and as it cooled a bit, they drank from the saucer.
I was born in 1942, so it was in the 1940's.
They had large white cups with handles and a large white saucer the cup fit
into-these were not mugs as we have but large cups.
They had a big napkin on their laps to wipe the dripping from their
moustaches! Funny how things come back when you read something about a
subject.
