As far as I know the DBC is based on information provided by the person requesting the DBC. In most cases there is no information at a courthouse, especially before 1910 or so. I suppose if someone knew that there were records in a courthouse, they could indicate that on the application.

That's why "other records" such as christening records, affidavits from siblings, aunts, uncles, neighbors, etc., were used.

Like the pension applications for the Revolutionary War soldiers, it is very interesting to see the application for the DBC because of some of the information it has. Some a little, some a lot.

In Oregon, the DBC applications are kept at the state Archives. Maybe Iowa has similar.

Pat, I got a delayed birth certificate for my husband's mother when I wrote
for her birth certificate and I didn't know if it is a true record or not.
Do they base those on other information they have at the court house? This
was in 1898 in Iowa. She was born in the Amana Colony.
