ANSWER TO BELOW:

Velma,
While the place of the birth of the parents in both the 1860 and 1870
Censuses has been transcribed as Nassau (which it really looks like) it might
have been a place in Germany. Not knowing the regions of Germany/Prussia I
can't help you there, perhaps someone else can.

Most likely this is your family. If you would like the images let me know
as I have them saved in my computer.

Subject: [ROOTS-L] Need help with a census and a ship
To:

Hi,

I am having trouble trying to locate a census for William J Meuser in
1860 and 1870. I have records for 1880 on. Information on the family
is as follows:

William J Meuser married Henrietta Stroll. We do not know if they were
married before they left Germany.
We believe that they came to the US between 1850-1853. They began
having children as follows.
:
William Louis Meuser born Cincinnati Ohio 30 Aug 1855
Edward Meuser born 9 Sept 1857
Carrie Meuser born July 24, 1859
Louis Meuser born 28 Dec. 1861
Henry A. Meuser born 19 July 1865
Fred (Frederick) Meuser born 5 March 1868
Emma Meuser born March 1872
These dates are from family records. All were born in Ohio

The reason that these census records are so important to me is that my
direct line ancestor is the one born in 1855. By the 1880 census
he was grown and out of the home. In fact he was in San Francisco by
then. I would like a census or two with him being with the family. In
fact Carrie also was not with the family. We don't think that she ever
married. The family lived close together. The unmarried children
lived with each other. The married children tended to live next door
or a few houses away.

QUESTION: Can anyone help me with this. Might they be on Heritage
Quest which I do not have access to?
Since the family remained in Ohio, except William Lewis, I am wondering
if there are State census records
(the 5s).

My other problem is that I am trying to find the ship's record for
William and Henrietta"s passage to America.
I was just in Salt Lake doing research for a week and we could not find
the ship. What I noticed is that we were mainly seeing New York
records. Where else might they have landed considering they went on to
NY? Does anyone have URLa (prefer free) for these other ports?

The family said that they were from Germany and they certainly have a
German name. The 1880 census says that they were from Prussia. My
father always said that there were no Catholics in our family. At
first I wondered if he said this because it went back to the Edict of
Nantes. I think that he might have been saying that he was from the
German part of Prussia which is in the North. It is my understanding
that most of the Protestants lived there. My brother believe that he
said that he was from Harburg if that is any help in locating them.

Thank you for any help thatyou can give to me.
Velma
