Hello Val, Yes they are imperial land measurements (I used to learn them at
school).
And I am only 61.
1 rod = 1 pole = 1 perch in other words they are all one and the same
measurement.
4 poles is a chain in ploughing terms.
1 pole is 5.5 yards
When the ploughman measured the area he had ploughed, he could do it with
the "sticks" used to keep the oxen in formation. (Like the teacher being
able to touch the child in the back seat with the cane and not getting up
off his chair!)
