Wow! Thanks to everyone who responded to my query. The response has been
overwhelming, and the consistent answer is to protect the wife's interest.
I thought that might be the answer, but yet, hadn't seen it in other
deeds, so wondered if there might be something unique about this one. I must
say this is really interesting since back then (1713) it was definitely "a
man's world".
