That simply is not true. Names that were changed were mostly due to what was
heard at the time their names were given to authorities and to irregularity
in spelling that can be traced back for centuries in our ancestors church
and other official records.
Of course there were a few who did it on purpose, but the percentage is so
small in comparison to those names that were just spelled differently
because of one or more reasons.
There are many sources you can read on this subject. Don't just take my word
for it.

I'm sure many deliberately changed their names but add this to clerks
who wrote down what they 'heard' and name owners who couldn't read and
therefore couldn't recognize what the clerks wrote. Also don't forget
diacritical marks for pronunciation don't intrepret well.
