I saw this message as I have not looked at mail for about two weeks with a
death in the family.
Computing Genealogy in the last year had a comparison article on software,
and I choose
Pocket Genealogy for my IPAQ M220. Yes I can update and transfer back.
Works great and also that IPAQ allows me to transfer Excel files back and
forth from work.

Subject: [RMagic] Palm OS Software

Fred:
I highly recommend Gedwise for Palm
handhelds. It takes a Gedcom export from any genealogy program such as
RootsMagic, and converts it into a database for the Palm OS. The Gedwise
software on the Palm then displays all your genealogy data, but as you note,
you can't edit it on the Palm. Gedwise is a great little program and is
very well supported by the publisher (www.BatteryParkSoftware.com). It's
$19.99 for new users (upgrades are
cheaper). It's terrific being able to carry all my genealogy data around in
my pocket! I don't own any stock in the company, I'm just a happy customer.

Here's the system requirements from the publisher's website:
System Requirements
GedWise requires the following to operate:

Any Palm compatible handheld device running Palm OSâ 3.3 or higher.
Compatible devices include:
the Palm™ III, IIIc, IIIe, IIIx, IIIxe, V, Vx, VII, VIIx, m100, m105, m125,
m500, m505, m515, Tungsten, Zire, the Handspring™ Visor Edge, Pro, Platinum,
Prism, Deluxe, Treo, the Sony Clie as well as other devices running the Palm
Operating System. We also recommend that you have at least 512K of free
memory on your handheld. Note that the Palm OS 3.5 and higher offers
significantly faster data transfer speed than earlier version of the
operating system.

Palm™ Desktop software with HotSync® Manager 3.1 or higher.

A PC running Windows 95/98/Me/NT/2000/XP. A minimum of 16 MB of RAM and 15
MB of free hard disk space is recommended.

PC-based genealogy software that is capable of creating a GEDCOM 5.5 file.
