Subject: Importing gedcom and Merging Individuals

Hi
There must be a trick I'm missing so I'm looking for some advice.
Here's a hypothetical example ...
In a branch of my tree Fred and Brenda have three children; Bill, Pete and
Fred. I don't know about their descendants. By chance I find someone else
who is a descendant of Pete, say, and they provide me with their gedcom
file of Pete, his spouse and all of the descendants. I import the tree,
manually merge the Petes together as one person, but my looks like
1 Fred
+Brenda
2 Bill
2 Pete
2 Fred
+Brenda
2 Pete
+ Jill
3 Petra
3 Jim
No matter how I fiddle with RootsMagic (2.04 under Win 98), I can't get the
tree to how it should be. To get it right, I end up exporting a gedcom of
my entire tree and hacking about in the file so when I import my "revised"
gedcom file I get
1 Fred
+Brenda
2 Bill
2 Pete
+ Jill
3 Petra
3 Jim
2 Fred
Now where am I going wrong?
