As an extension to the individual Ref #, what would be handy would be an
automatic internal MREF number for each marriage. This would allow you to
file family group sheets and other files by the MREF number. This, however,
would be one more number that would need to be an option so it wouldn't
clutter up other reports. A report listing the MREF number and the couple
associated with the number would be handy as an index for the files.

Record numbers (Rec#) are assigned by the program and are essential.
The program couldn't work without them. Reference numbers (Ref#) are
something the user can assign if he wants to but are not essential.
But try to print a Birthday & Anniversary List, Duplicate List,
Alternate Name List, Individual List, Kinship List, Marriage List or
Source List without a Rec# - it can't be done. Admittedly, these
numbers are useful to the user but, as you said, they don't make
sense to another person. That's why we need an option of NONE as
well as Rec# or Ref#.

As to clutter, I agree. But when I look at the edit individual
screen, I've got to ask myself how often do I use the Prefix, Suffix
and Nickname fields? Or the Living? field. If there were a box for
Ref#, I would use it for everyone in my tree. The RM Explorer screen
is pretty well packed but the column of commands (add, edit, delete,
etc.) on the extreme right could be squeezed a little. The info
panels on the right could also be narrowed some. Then the search
list panel on the left could be expanded to make room for my new
Ref# column. Also note that if you have a person with a long name
that is truncated by the Born column, You can expand the name by
highlighting it.

These are some of my thoughts about "tweaking" the program.
