OK, all I can suggest is that you check the Word 2002 help files.
Probably look for graphics or pictures and hiding.or suppressing.

My Word is 2000, and Microsoft has probably changed things quite a bit
between the two versions.
I don't see anything about suppressing pictures in Word 2000, but it
could be there.

What happens if you save the MS Word RTF file as a DOC file, then reopen it?
