In my experience, you are on the right track, Barbara.
Once you have your document in Word, you can delete the header (easier in WordPerfect, by the way, but few have it anymore), make your own title page, place your own page numbering system, etc., etc. You also can change the location of the Index from the end of the book to the beginning, with no page numbers on the Index pages and make the index inside newspaper columns (though you have a two-column option in RootsMagic, as well).
I always save in .rtf format and edit the book in Word or WordPerfect.
