I agree with you about not needing to record a surname. In RootsMagic, I just need to go to Search, Person and in the RootsMagic Explorer highlight a person that has no surname. Then I look at the information for that individual and family on the right and I am able to see who they are related to as well as facts I have about that individual. This works for me.

I can also see why some people would want to also use different ways to use the brackets and nicknames so they can see who the spouse is. I just feel that there will be issues to deal with when making reports and uploading data to the internet etc.

solution to this. Since they had no surname, I don't record any surname.

Shouldn't that be the simple solution. When we find no surname, we can't
record any surname until we hopefully find one. Does that create a problem?
