It sounds like you have to set the Windows Association for the TXT files.
This is only ONE way to do it.

Go to the Start menu/button
Choose SEARCH
Documents (Word processing, spreadsheets etc)
in the resulting dialog box, enter "*.TXT"
To save time, you can hit the stop button as soon as one or two show up.
Right click on one of the found TXT files
choose "Open With" then "Choose Program" at the bottom of the list.
Choose Your desired program, NotePad, -DON'T double click it, just
highlight it, (I like WordPad better) --
Then check the box at the bottom, "Always use this program to open this
kind of file"
Now open the file because if you Cancel, the setting does not stick.
