If the default was by birth date, the ones with a birth date would be
sorted, then the ones without would be sorted separately; not something I
would like to see by default.

When you add a group of children, or add a child to an existing family, you
are given the option of sorting the children - by birth date, or by using
arrow keys to move those without dates to their proper positions. If you use
this feature each time you add children, they will appear in order most of
the time. If you update or add a birth, remember to rearrange the birth
order as well. If you notice the children are out of order, fix them as you
see them. Doing these things will keep the children in the desired order.
