I tend to agree with you Margaret. I started out keeping copies of the
census records but no longer do that. I live in a small mountain town of
about 5,000 people and I do not have access to the National Archives and
have no large library to frequent, in fact our library does not even have a
genealogy section and some of the folks don't even know what it is, lol. So
for some folks it may be a good thing to keep copies of the census records.

I can understand why some people might want some census pages, and I
have kept a few in my file cabinets, but generally have just transcribed
needed information into RM notes for an individual or family that would read

well in a narrative. However, census documents remain in the National
Archives on microfilm, so even if Ancestry and some of the other places of
availability as well were gone I can still find originals.

Personally I have come to the conclusion that keeping many paper copies
or even scanned ones are not worth my time. Once the information I want is
in my database, there usually is little need for follow-up, and if it is, I
know which census to seek out. Large public libraries often have census
microfilm as well as the National Archives.

Also -- just to clear up a possible misinterpretation -- Rootsweb is
still free as is this mailing list and others. And it costs nothing to
access the shared databases on WorldConnect -- also on Rootsweb.

And for those who may not have the resources to subscribe to Ancestry at

home, try your public library. Many larger libraries offer it for free.
For those who started genealogy online, they frequently have forgotten
historical societies, libraries, etc. that were standard sources in the
past.
