The first thing I would do would be to restore the backup, you may want
to restore it into a new folder to prevent overwriting the present database.
If the backup is OK, there you are!

If the backup contains all those duplicates too, you might try another
tack: (Unless you have an earlier backup)--(If you haven't merged anyone
this should work)
Check Tools - Count Trees in Database -- If you have two sets of trees,
you are in good shape. copy the name and/or record number of the person
listed in each one of the duplicate trees.
Export a GEDCOM file of selected people,
Highlight one of those people you noted above and click the mark people,
select "Everyone in person's tree"
highlight the next person on your list and mark everyone in his tree.
Repeat until you have all the trees selected, Make sure you have all the
options selected and export the GEDCOM.
Import this GEDCOM file into a new database and see what you have.

Of course it is easiest if you have all your people connected in one
tree, I know of one person who has nearly four thousand trees in one
database, this process would be rather daunting with that database..

----------------
The only way I know of for something like this to happen is to import a
GEDCOM file, probably from the same database, into an existing database.
Backups and restores won't do it.
