Yes, I do all of that. I have files named in a way that I can find them
easily, but RootsMagic does not make it fast. I have used TMG, Legacy, and
GenBox and all of them make working with media much better, so that's what
I'm comparing it with.

What you are suggesting put the burden on the user, when the software ought
to work differently and better. I just went into GenBox and I had forgotten
how amazingly great it works there. When I am on the event page, I can click
on a link to add media. A list of media pops up. It's a list view with a
full view of the file name. I can enter a term in the search box, and file
names comes up.

Contrast that with RootsMagic. I have to click on a button to even get the
image into the gallery, rather than it looking at a folder that has all of
my images. Why am I doing this extra step? I have no control over the way it
displays, and it gives me thumbnails, and I can't even see the full name of
the file, so I have to click on various files to figure out which one is the
right one. Making the thumbnails smaller and thus seeing less of the file
name is clearly not a solution to this problem.

How I name my files is not even remotely the problem. When a person states a
problem that they are having with the program, especially when it's a design
issue, please don't offer computer 101. I have very consistent naming
conventions, which is the only reason I can find the files at all.

Now, obviously there are other things I love about this program, or I
wouldn't be using it. But, after days and days of working with census
images, can you tell how frustrated I am!

RootsMagic 4 doesn't care where your media files are kept so you can keep
your census files together if you want or not.
The main thing is the naming so when they are lumoped together you can find
them for reuse in the gallery.
Thumbnails are made relative to size and resolution of the original although
they are viewed initially as one size. When they are opened up to larger
size it is also in relation to the original size.
Reading the help file can clarify some questions.

I have a lot of census. I keep them by surname (& Pic and doc) in
subdirectories under the RMmultimedia location. It is a problem lumping
everything in a gallery - I don't like it much, but where I keep the census
it is easy as I name the file Year, State, County, other description such as
town or community then the surname and given name. They line up pretty well
that way. It doesn't work that well to have them in a subdirectory instead
of in the gallery, but I guess I'll get it figured out. Any suggestions
welcome. :-)
