Hi Dee,
There is a website published by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day
Saints that is similar to the Ancestry.com's online family tree. It's
located at: https://new.familysearch.org
Currently I believe only members of the LDS Church have access to the
NewFamilySearch website. However, they have announced that it's only a
matter of time before it's open to everyone world-wide. When that happens,
I suspect it will become just as popular or more so than the Ancestry.com
online family trees because it will be free.
I don't want to get cornered into a product (FamilyTreeMaker) that appears
to intentionally have left out the interface to such a large online
collection of information (NewFamilySearch). I can understand why they
would as it's a competing product with Ancestry.com and they're trying to
turn a profit. But it's a negative in my book because it basically creates
two large silos of genealogical data on the Internet. So it's up to
software developers to try to bridge the gap or for genealogists to double
enter everything. Keeping everything in sync is tough these. My guess is
Ancestry.com won't open their APIs (ability for software to talk directly to
their website) in order to "synch" from RootsMagic anytime in the future.
NewFamilySearch has published their APIs so that any software (including
FamilyTreeMaker if Ancestry.com added that feature) can be certified to
synch with the NewFamilySearch website. Maybe Bruce could comment on that
point based on his experience to date.
The closest I've been able to come to a happy medium is to use RootsMagic as
my primary desktop software and once every couple of years I export a GEDCOM
from RootsMagic and upload it to Ancestry.com. I feel it's important to
publish to Ancestry.com because I get a number of genealogy contacts a month
that have seen my online tree and sometimes provide info to me I didn't
already have.
Kind of long-winded, but hopefully that explains a little bit more.
