When I first tried FTM 2008 (the very flawed first version of the current
versions of FTM), I did a gedcom from RootsMagic and imported it into FTM
2008. I keep the most up to date RM update so it would have been in the same
time frame. After I opened my individuals in FTM 2008, the pictures of
individuals I had added pictures to popped up on the FTM tree. I was
surprised that it was using the same RM Pictures file that I use for
RootsMagic. When I exported to the gedcom from RM, the gedcom included the
link to my pictures. In RM, if you move the location of the
picture/pictures, their location has to be "fixed." FTM collected pictures
together in one "gallery." I have just started putting up trees on Ancestry
so have not used FTM 2012 as a "database" very much. Since I didn't know how
the Ancestry database was going to work, I did not upload media. I chose to
enter it separately. The RM link refers to where the pictures are located on
your computer. Ancestry has a link to the uploaded picture. So just the
links are included in both programs. I had to take a tree down to fix
something and then uploaded it again. Everything I had before that I know of
(someone said the "comments" might be lost), was still there when I uploaded
it again. Now if I were entering pictures to FTM 2012 on my computer and
synchronizing them with Ancestry tree on line, I don't know what the
situation would be.

Subject: [RMagic] Ancestry > RM5 > Ancestry
I'd like to use both Ancestry and RootsMagic for different reasons.
However, when I export a tree from Ancestry, work on it in RM and then
export it back to Ancestry all of the media links are broken.
1. I made a simple, single person tree on Ancestry.com with minimal facts;
name, sex, date of birth and one source
citation (1920 US Federal Census) linked to the birth.
2. That exported as a 42 line GED file.
3. I created a new blank RM tree, imported the GED and immediately exported
(taking all defaults) resulting in a 793
line GED.
4. I imported that back into Ancestry and the links to the media (US
Census) are broken.
I tried to look at the differences between the two GED files, but RM bloated
it so much it is difficult to find the important facts from the blank
template information added.
I'm sure I'm not the first person who has tried this, is it possible to keep
Ancestry's media links intact AND use RM with the same data?
Paul
