Dear Tom,
I mailed a check along with a list of family members
born in Roscommon in the 1820-1840 time period. Date -
September 10, 2001.
The website of the Heritage Soc. said that they
usually would respond within a month, but there was a
3 month backlog. So, I waited about 4 months and then
sent a very polite email to inquire on the status of
my request of September 10, 2001. I did receive a
response that they had been on Christmas holiday and
had also been moving. (Probably rearranging furniture)
Anyway, Mary Skelly promised to get the report done
and out to me within two weeks. About a month later I
emailed again, wondering if the mail had 'gone
astray'. At that time she advised me that it had been
sent but she would remail it. She also gave me the
five baptismal records from the RC parish of Elphin in
a quick return email. Received on Jan. 29, 2002. (They
had not found the parent's marriage.) The report came
in the mail about 10 days later.
However, after a search which began in 1971, I
finally know the townland, Lisphillip, in the parish
of Kilmacumsy. She included the names of the
godparents, and my Morris great greatgrandmother now
has the name, Dolan. (A name we never knew) There
would have been no other way to learn this and so I
have to thank Mary Skelly for that.
After hearing that some people waited 8 months, I
guess my not quite 5 month wait was not so bad.
I hope that you get some good information, soon.
Meanwhile, what I did was continue to check the
Leitrim -Roscommon Homepage. That helped keep me sane
if not happy while I waited.
Best wishes
Joan Morris Schmitt
