Hi Earl,
Thanks for your e-mail. As far as I know, this Alexander is not a
connection. I have finally traced this MACDONALD line as there are a
lot of illegitimate births, and the surname of the Isabella POTTS that I
was looking for was registered as Isabella MACDONNEL. Her mother's name
was Catherine MACDONALD and she had two other children - Elizabeth
MACDONALD and Samuel RANGER, who was also registered as MACDONALD. In
the various census returns this woman changed her surname and that of
her children from MACDONALD to RANGER to POTTS and back again, as the
fancy took her, and she has led me a merry dance through the Highlands,
from Killilan in Wester Ross to Stornoway, Isle of Lewis and finally to
Torridon. However, when I finally worked it all out, it gave me a great
feeling of satisfaction.
Finding Catherine MACDONALD's antecedents is proving equally as
difficult, however. Her mother's name is Elizabeth RANKIN adn she
doesn't appear to have been married either, so I am on to another
mystery. However, if it can be done with a name like MACDONALD in
Stornoway, I am sure it can be done with Rankin also!
Anyway, I am sure you didn't want this long epistle, a short thank you
would have been enough! However, as this reply is going to the list, I
thought I would enter some of the detail in case it rang any bells with
a list member. Thanks again.
Best regards
Karen MacRae
