Thank you to all who answered my queries about Poolewe.
My next is a general one. I don't expect anyone to research this but just to
answer if you have any general knowledge on the subject.
I am wondering why people from Ross-Shire chose to migrate to Australia in
the 1840's. It was before the gold rush, which didn't start until 1851.
It seems an isolated area or have I got that wrong. What would have been the
attraction ? Was the area quite poor? It is sure a very long way from there
to Australia, especially when people often used to grow up and marry and
have their family and never seem to travel out of their parish in their
lifetime. It is a huge leap from that to moving to Australia. (I am , of
course discounting those that travelled somewhat against their inclinations
as the "guests" of the government <G>).
My ancestor listed her occupation and that of her father as a servant.
Do you know what port people usually sailed from?
Any insight at all would be gratefully received
Pam, Australia
