Aha!
I've just 'got' the nephew bit! Obvious, once you understand, I hope you
don't mind my explaining.
The relevant people listed on the census entry and their relationships to
the head are:
FRASER John Head age 77
Chirsty Wife age 73
Donald Son age 42
Margaret Wife age 23
Andrew Son age 4
Chirsty Dau age 2
McKAY Simon Nephew age 28
At first glance, this looks like a man with two wives! However, Margaret
(age 23) is the wife of Donald (age 42). Andrew (age 4) and Chirsty (age 2)
described as son and daughter are Donald and Margaret's children. Simon
McKay is Donald's nephew. Problem solved.
Perhaps Donald was the one who gave the census enumerator the information
along the lines of - 'Yes, John, my father's the head, then there's his
wife, and Margaret, my wife, Andrew my son and Chirsty my daughter. And
there's also Simon my nephew.'
Sounds reasonable!
Lesley
