Subject: [RUDDLESFORT] Linck, Zinn, and Zumwalt
>From Marshall Lowe
I descend from John Zinn, captured at Ruddlesfort, with his Uncle John
Linck and his wife Margaret and young children. I live in SE Ohio and
because it is a five hours drive I regret that I can not be more active
in attending meetings and reunions. My wife and I did attend one that
included a trip to the actual site, and we appreciated the work that has
gone into all of them. .
In an 11 Aug 2000 posting on the Link-L mailing list Alexandra Robbin
stated: that John Link left with his wife Margaret and children from
the Wheeling (W)V area “to deliver his nephew, John Zinn, into the care
of their mutual uncle, George Zumwalt.” She also states in a 22 Sept
1999 posting on the Genweb Kentucky Genealogical Forum that: “George
Zumwalt had been conscripted to help build the [Ruddell’s] Station.”
Can this be information be confirmed?
John Zinn’s pension application states “he remained in Augusta [county]
Virginia until about September 1779 when he moved with his said Uncle to
Riddle Station (sic) ...now in Bourbon County Kentucky where he arrived
in the month of January, 1780.” I doubt that he was from the Wheeling
WV area and question that George Zumwalt was a blood uncle.
Even if John Zinn was not actually delivered into the care of his uncle
George Zumwalt, I still believe that there is a connection of some sort
among the Zumwalts, Lincks, and Zinn’s. Would anyone know what it might
be?
I would also like to know if there were others (particularly Germans)
at Ruddle’s Station who also came across the Cumberland Gap from the
Shenandoah Valley.
Many years ago my family visited the area as a tourist, and found it
difficult to find Ruddle’s Station. Location. We went by mistake to
Ruddle’s Mills, and found a sign pointing to Ruddle’s Station. After
following false leads, we finally discovered that it was inaccessible on
private property. We did however very much enjoy a Ruddlesfort Reunion
which included a visit to the Station location.
Marshall and Betty,
My family, the La Forces, came down from the western end of the Shenandoah
Valley (Botetourt Co near the top of the mountain range) through the
Cumberland Gap and on to Martin Station. According to a book on the life
and travels of Daniel Boone, they met up with his group from North Carolina
in the spring of 1780--at Moccasin Gap, VA and all traveled through the
Cumberland Gap into Ky.
There are other people who have given accounts that agree with this.
