Niel,
Well that sent me off on a voyage of discovery.
I reminded myself that one of the reasons I was interested in this family
was a SHIEL connection.
Assuming correct id of your David/Sarah in 1901 and that he is indeed the 3
yr old in 1881, I am happy that the family concerned is that of George
RUNCIMAN and Janet DARLING.
You should get a marriage certificate to prove this.
1841: in North Berwick with assumed children Agnes, John, George, Darling
and what is probably some relation of Janet's, a David DARLING, aged 70.
1851: Janet DARLING, mother in law of Robert DAUGHTY, with Robert & Agnes
DAUGHTY in Whitekirk & Tynninghame, East Lothian along with Robert DAUGHTY's
brothers-in-law: John, George and Darling RUNCIMAN
1861: Janet DARLING with Robert & Agnes DOUGHTY at North Berk Abbey (as
transcribed on Ancestry), North Berwick along with someone Ancestry have
indexed as "Rimernard Durling" whom I take to be Darling RUNCIMAN given he's
of the right age and birthplace.
The SHIEL connection comes in because George RUNCIMAN married Elizabeth
DAVIDSON, dtr of William DAVIDSON and Elizabeth SHIELL.
Elizabeth's sister Janet married John RUNCIMAN, George's brother.
Elizabeth DAVIDSON/SHIELL's 1872 death cert shows her as the dtr of a
joiner, Robert SHIELL and Janet m.s. LUMSDEN.
Who may or may not be some connection to my James SHIELL.
Have fun proving all of this.

Niel,
I can't spot a David RUNCIMAN of about 1890 in the Scottish 1891 census, BUT
there was a Darling RUNCIMAN (marr. 1862 to Elizabeth AINSLIE) with a son
David aged 9 in the 1881 census.
They were living at Aberlady Mains, Dirleton Parish, Haddington, East
Lothian.
Which is probably a red herring because in the 1901 census (most libraries
have ancestry.com where you can see these, or visit Scotlands People at
http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/
)
At Hutton Castle East Lodge, in Hutton, Berwickshire, there's a family
David RUNCIMAN 23, electric lightkeeper b Earlston
Sarah Jane 22 wife b Coldingham, BEW
With sons George 2, born Whitsome, BEW and William 5mths b Hutton.
So in 1881 he looks more like the David 3, son of George and Elizabeth in
Mertoun, BEW.
The census shows that George was 44 b Whiteside East Lothian and Elizabeth
39 b Longformarcus BEW
I have a suspicion, unproven, that this George is the brother of the above
Darling RUNCIMAN.
Given that in 1881 there's an Agnes DAVIDSON aged 8 with the family of
George and Elizabeth, niece b Stitchill, ROX, I strongly suspect that
Elizabeth was Elizabeth DAVIDSON.
A George RUNCIMAN and Elizabeth DAVIDSON married 25 Nov 1868 at Cumrig,
Greenlaw, BEW:
cert reads: George RUNCIMAN, labourer & widower, s/o George RUNCIMAN,
ploughman and Janet m.s. DARLING, both dec. married Elizabeth DAVIDSON,
spinster, d/o William DAVIDSON, labourer and Elizabeth m.s. SHIEL.
Witnessed by William D DAVIDSON and Hellen DAVIDSON (after banns, Ch of Sct,
both resident Crumrig)
I believe that George's first wife was an Agnes RUNCIMAN and that this might
be their marriage 13 Dec 1861 at Dunbar, Haddington
cert reads: after banns, forms of the Est. Ch of Sct, George RUNCIMAN, 27,
farm servant of Newtowns (?), son of George farm servant, dec. and Jane m.s.
DARLING, married his 1st cousin, Agnes RUNCIMAN, 30, dom. servant of
Eastdeans(?) d/o Alexander farm servant and Jane m.s. MANDERSON, both dec.
Minister John JEFFREY, Min. of Dunbar, Wit: Darling RUNCIMAN, Robert DOUGHTY
At this point my interest in the family waned as they looked like the Dunbar
lot rather than my Earlston lot <g>
Good luck,

married to a miss Sarah Logan. they had five children i believe, any help
