Jim, you might try searching for variant spellings in the Baden-
Württemberg area. My umpteenth great-grandmother goes back
to RUOP in that same area. Her father was Hans Jacob RUOP
and she was born in Ötisheim, Württemberg, Germany. Records
for her and her husband, Johannes BREYHEL were found in the
Evangelical Lutheran Church in Ötisheim. (Johannes was known
as John BROYLES in the Colonies, with a few record entries
showing Johannes BREYHEL. The wife's name was Ursula
RUOP.)

Johannes' name, and the name of his father and children, were
spelled variously as BREIHEL, BREYEL, BRIEL, and BREŸHEL,
with the last one being the most prevalent. Mind that all these
different spellings were for the SAME family, and all written in
the same Church Records over a very short period of time. We
must remember that in that time frame, and even much later, there
were no set spellings for surnames. Scribes, clerks, church officials,
etc., just wrote down the name the way they thought it sounded,
just like the clerks in the Colonies did. Most of the citizens didn't
read and write, so THEY certainly didn't know how their names
should have been spelled!

I would look for RUPP, RÜPP, RUOP, ROUP, and any other
spelling variant you can think of. We had not known Ursula's
surname and researchers had searched for it all throughout the
1900's. It wasn't until Johni Cerny and Gary Zimmerman went
to Germany to search for our Germanna ancestors that they
found the answer, and answers to many other questions. They
went through all the towns and villages and searched the Church
records, providing much needed data. Sometimes the digging
really gets tough.

Regards,
Sgt. George
