Eventhough Mme Beljakova is right. By an Imperial Decree (Ukase), the late
Emperor Peter III decided that the name of the Imperial House, should be
Romanov-Holstein. It was the same case of Empress Maria Theresia of Austria,
the last Habsburg married to Franz von Lothringen, or Franz de Lorraine.
Their children and all their off-spring were Habsburg-Lothringen.
Any way, all the Russian Imperial Family married to German princes and
princesses. It was the case of Alexander I, to a Wurttemberg, Nicholas I to
Sophie von Hohenzollern, Princess of Prussia, Alexander II to Mary of
Hesse-Darmstadt, Alexander III to Dagmar of Denmark (Princess of
Schleswig-Holstein, thus German), and Nicholas II to Alix von
Hesse-Darmstadt. Very few of the Grand Dukes were married to non German
spouses, that was the case of Grand Duke Nikolai Nikolaevich, and his
brother Peter Nikolaevich, both married to "the Montenegrines" Anastasia and
Militaza, sisters of Helena Queen of Italy, and daughters of King Nicholas
of Montenegro. Grand Duke Vladimir Aleksandrovich was married to a Princess
of Mecklenburg (Grand Duchess Maria the elder), Grand Duke Paul to Alexandra
of Greece (Again another Princess of Schleswig Holstein Glucksburg
Sonderburg), and as a widower ot a lady of low nobility, the future Princess
Paley. Grand Duke Sergei was married to Princess Elisabeth of Hesse, "la
tante Ella". The rest of the Aleksandrovichi married morganatically
(Aleksey, etc). The Konstantinovichii were married to Germans, K.K. to
Elisabeth Makrevievna (Princess of Saxe Altenburg, a cousin, because his
mother Alexandra Iosifovna was also a Princess of Saxe Altenburg). their
sons were married into the Russian Nobility, and in one case to a Princess
of Serbia (A Karageorgevich), a family that was not recognized as rulers of
Serbia, because their involvement with the assasination of King Alexander
Obrenovich and Queen Draga in Belgrade. Nowadays, the Romanov are married
with Russians of the high nobility, or commonards, with the exception of
Princess Maria Vladimirovna, divorced of Georg von Hohenzollern and daughter
of a Princess Bagration-Mujransky (former rulers till 1801, of Georgia) and
grand daughter of Kirill Vladimirovich, married to Victoria Melita of Saxe
Coburg ("Ducky" was a daughter of Alfie Duke of Edinburgh, after Duke of
Saxe Coburg and Maria Aleksandrovna of Russia -the only daughter of the
first marriage of Alexander II). Maria can't be heiress to the Russian
Throne, because Nicholas II expresely precluded the children of his cousin
of that rights. Ducky was first married to Ernie Grand Duke of Hesse
Darmstadt und der Rhein, brother of Empress Alexandra and Grand Duchess
Elisabeth Feodorovna. An there is a moral issue either, Grand Duke Kyrill
joined the February Revolution and betrayed his cousin the Emperor. He
ordered the withdrawal of all the regiments of the Imperial Guard, and left
the Imperial Family without protection at Tsarskoe Selo. He took a
automobile and with full uniform he was wondering Saint Petersburg wearing a
red badge, afterwards the fled to Finland, He dishonoured his title and his
position, was a kind of Philippe Egalite of the Russian Revolution.
Yours
Louis Wetzler v. Plankenstern
