A James Rutledge was in Henrico Co. Va. as early as 1688. (Va. Genealogist,
Vol. 3) James died c. 1712 per inventory of his estate 7/25/1712.(Henrico
Co. Will Bk.1). There were a number of other Rutledge families in Henrico
and other nearby early Co.s of Va. from 1740-1800 inc. James, John, Thomas
Rutledges. It is likely that when the frontier of Augusta Co. opened up that
some of these families moved to Augusta Co. Other Rutledge families from
this area also lateer migrated to the Carolinas.
A James Rutledge was in Amelia Co. Va. in 1740 when he was ordered to help
work on the roads.. (Amelia Co. order Bk.1,: 132.) He bought land in Pr.
Edward Co. 1/12/1746. (VA. Magazine of History, 22V,305, Land Patent 24,
1745/46) On 1/18/1744 James and Sarah Rutledge, sold land to John Nash. On
1/3/1757. A Thomas Rutledge also owned land near Jas. Rutledge in Pr. Edward
Co. in 1757. I am not familiar with Bristol Parish but Pr. George Co.Va.
formed in 1703 was the parent Co. of Amelia. Luenburg, Pr. Edward etc. This
James and Sarah Rutledge are probably the parents of William b. 171732.
