Notes from visit to Hampden-Sydney College VA 9-28-99

P. 39. Under him (Drury Lacy) the fund-raising strategy of appealing to the
general assembly for escheats was tried again (1794), only this time after a
little more homework. A committee of the board scoured the records of
Prince Edward and neighboring counties looking for as yet unassigned
escheatables of Loyalists; of such it found none, but they did discover that
on the Appomattox River, a few miles west of the place that would become
(1798) Farmville, there was a tract of land of almost 1300 acres escheatable
since 1766- thirty two years before - because its last owner, a Mr.
Routledge, had left no heirs when he was killed during an arugment over
Britain's imperial policy.

p. 4-5 While the Prince Edward area was a part of Amelia, a network of raods
was cleared from north to south and from east to west. The names of the
surveyors, who directed the clearning and upkeep of the roads, and of those
assigned to help them provide a partial list of the earliest settlers in
Prince Edward: George Walker, road to be cleared from the mouth of Bush
River below the mouth of Sandy River into Walkers road by Rutledge and
Walker's and Nash's hands, 1740. (Amelia Order Book 1:132) continued:

p. 64 Judith Rutledge succeeded her husband as sexton at Sandy River in
1757. (Vestry book:5)
The parish levy for 1758 includes an item allowing her twelve shillings
sixpence for washing and keeping the surplice; the same allowance was made
to Elizabeth Rice for the same servcie (Vestry Book:7)
p.63-64 When St. Patricks Parish was created, there were two churches in its
territory, Sandy River and Buffalo. At the vestry meeting which called
Garden as minister, Richard Rutledge was elected Sexton at Sandy River and
Frances Rice at Buffalo... (vestry book:2)
p. 7 Benjamin Woodson, road from the fork to Rutledge's Fork, above the

P. 17 (Charles Anderson had license for an ordinary in 1749 at intersection
of an
important east-west road and an important north-south road. E/W by Sandy
River Church past Anderson's and through Buffaloe Settlement to the west.

Court appoints Abner Nash, John Morton, & Richard MOrton to view a site and
report to court. Approve July. Built Feb 9, 1762. 7 years later another
bridge at Rutledges by Peter LeGrand. (Order Book 4:184,240)
