I need some objective opinions, observations, whatever. After reading
this, does it appear to anyone that Charles is related to Samuel?
First (definite) sighting of my ancestor, Charles Rutledge, was when he
married in Morgan County, GA, 1825. (Although I'm trying to prove 1819,
Clarke Co GA). The 1850 Census indicates Charles was born in GA, ca.
1800.
Now, Charles had other Rutledges all around him in Morgan County, GA.
So far, no proof that he is related to any of them. There was a Samuel,
b. ca. 1795, (where?). Samuel married in 1818 in Morgan County, GA
(Francis McClendon).
I had the idea that maybe Samuel was Charles' brother...only five years
difference in their ages. Also, Samuel and "a" Charles were in Clarke
Co, GA, about the same time (see below). Not only that, but when
Charles was in Chambers Co, AL, in 1840...guess who was there, also...
Samuel ! Right age...Samuel, 40-50, with a female same age (Francis).
Also, in Samuel's HH was a male, age 60-70. Not Samuel's father...he
died in 1814**.
**1814 Clarke Co, GA Guardian's Bonds names Richard Stewart guardian of
Samuel and Alva Rutledge; orphans of John Rutledge. (Why aren't John's
other sons, John S. and Richard named here?) The reason I ask is
because in 1821, Samuel is appointed guardian of John S. and Richard
Rutledge, orphans of John Rutledge. In either case, there is no
Charles. Should I give up on this theory? Before I do, let me throw
this in...Clarke Co, GA, Militia Records, 1816-1821... Charles Rutledge,
Sgt, 1819. However, I can't be sure this Charles is my ancestor.
On to Morgan County, GA, 1820; there was a John Rutledge, age 16-26,
(Samuel's' brother??); Samuel Rutledge, age 16-26; and a Kiah Rutledge,
age 26-45. (Only Rutledges listed in Morgan Co.) I suspect my Charles
was there also...but not being a Head of Household, he was not listed on
the index. (Remember, Charles married there in 1825). Now, in Samuel's
household there was a male, age 10-16...too old to be Samuel's son...but
too young to be Charles. Maybe a brother of Samuel? (Who has a list
of John and Elizabeth (Stewart) Rutledge's children. That's where all
this is heading. 'Course the detour is going to be when someone tells
me that John and Elizabeth's ONLY sons were Samuel, Alva, Richard, and
John. (Incidentally, Charles had sons named John, Richard, and
Samuel...yeah, I know, coincidence).
I can
pretty much eliminate Kiah as a possible father for Charles because of
Kiah's Will of 1840 (Morgan Co.) Only one son named in the Will...
Joshua. Or maybe he (Kiah) disinherited Charles?? If that happened,
would that have been written into the Will?
In 1830 and 1840, Morgan County, GA, only Rutledges found are Kiah and
son, Joshua. Charles is in Henry Co, GA, and Samuel is in Pike Co, GA.
Then as I stated earlier, Charles and Samuel were both in Chambers Co,
AL, 1840. Samuel was not there with Charles in 1850, tho'.
Well, this should give everyone a nice headache...I know it did me!
How many think these Rutledges are kin!
