Subject: Linking Joseph Rutledge and Ann Atwood to Joseph Rutledge and Nancy Harden
Date: Tue, 28 Sep 2004 14:37:14 -0500
Hello Everyone
I am fairly convinced that the Joseph Rutledge of Prince Edward Co.,
Virginia, and husband of Ann Atwood is the same Joseph Rutledge that
married Nancy Harden in Columbia Co., Georgia. I was hoping someone could
give me a second opinion. Here is what I have so far.
DNA testing of descendants of Joseph, husband of Nancy, shows a close link
to the Virginia Rutledges.
Both Josephs are said to be born about 1772. Joseph, husband of Nancy was
born on Oct. 6, 1771.
Joseph Rutledge and Ann Atwood are in Virginia at least until they are
married on Aug. 29, 1793 in Prince Edward Co., Virginia. Then there are no
more records of them. The first known record of Joseph, husband of Nancy
is there marriage on Dec. 24, 1799. The timeline seems to fit, just need
to fill in the missing years between 1793 and 1799.
Joseph Rutledge and Ann Atwood can be traced back to Prince Edward Co.,
Virginia where they married. Both of there families lived in Prince Edward
Co., Virginia. Nancy Harden can also be traced back to Lunenberg, Virginia
where her family also lived around the same place and time. The Rutledge,
Atwood, and Harden families probable all knew each other.
Both James Atwood, Ann's father and William Collins, Ann's father-in-law
are mention on the marriage bond of Ann Atwood and Joseph Rutledge.
Martha McGehee (Jacob) was born January 12, 1749/50 in Amelia,
Virginia. She married (1) James Atwood, son of James Atwood and Mary
?. He was born Abt. 1731, and died Bef. October 1783. She married (2)
William Collins October 30, 1783 in Prince Edward County, Virginia.
Children of Martha McGehee and James Atwood are:
i.Ann Atwood, born 1780. She married Joseph Rutledge, Jr. August 29,
1793 in Prince Edward County, Virginia; born Abt. 1772 in Virginia.
The marriage bond of Joseph Rutledge and Nancy Harden bonds Joseph Rutledge
and William Atwood.
Here is my best translation of the marriage bond.
1799 - Rutledge, Joseph - Nancey Harden

William Atwood of Columbia Co., GA is linked to the Prince Edward Co., VA
Atwoods threw William Collins, father-in-law of Ann Atwood using the
following information.
>> ca. Mar 1803, James Atwood dies intestate, Virginia; property in
Columbia, GA;
>> 15 Jul 1803, William Collins declined acting as administrator of the
estate of James Atwood and William Atwood granted Letter of Administration
for estate of James Atwood, Columbia, GA;
My guess is that the James Atwood and William Atwood mentioned in Columbia
Co., GA are brothers of Ann Atwood.
