Subject: Slave uprising?
Date: 15 Jul 00 19:39:45 MDT
The genealogy list had a comment about a slave uprising in 1808. Does anyone
know details?
Here is what I could find:
Rosenthal (Encyclopaedia of Southern Africa): "A slave rebellion in 1808 was
suppressed with severity."
Marquard (A Short History of South Africa): No mention.
Shell (Children of Bondage): No mention.
Walker (A History of Southern Africa): "... and once a revolt of over 300
slaves organised by two Irishmen in the Malmesbury district."
At this time, Britain had just abolished the slave trade, although the slaves
would not be freed for another 20 or 30 years. 1808 is during the second
British occupation, with a slave society inherited from the Dutch. I am
intrigued by two points:
What was the British attitude to "punishment" of the rebelling slaves?
Was this an important historical event? So far, it seems not to be, based on
the books I have quoted above.
