Mansell:

Thank you very much for your reply. I look forward to reading your article.
In the meantime, I would still like to find other written accounts of this
"slave uprising" incident, if anyone knows of them.

The slave uprising and the Etienne Barbier incident (1739) lead me to the one
which really resonates in Boer / Afrikander lore: The Slagtersnek
(Slachtersnek) rebellion of 1815. The following, from Eric A. Walker, is to be
compared to your comment below:

" ... the fact that the judges were either Hollanders or Afrikaners
administering the fierce Roman-Dutch law of the day may serve to modify harsh
judgements on the conduct of the British."

I think an article that deals with both the slave uprising and the Slagtersnek
rebellion, explains their parallels, and how they came to be remembered (or
not), would be most interesting.

Incidentally, I believe that my ancestors were involved (as "rebels") at
Slagtersnek, both on my grandmother's side (via de Villiers) and my
grandfather's (via de Klerk). While looking for more information, I
discovered that there is a history / genealogy book by Marq de Villiers,
called "White Tribe Dreaming". A scathing review can be seen at

Best wishes

"Also in need of investigation are the pitfalls of Dutch colonial justice and
how the British were saddled with a colony of virtually non-British
inhabitants and an entrenched Roman-Dutch legal system. If you are
interested, I am working on an article about this event and will
let you know about its availability nearer the time of completion."
